I årtionden dominerade tryckpressen stockar och axellyftar. En tung, obekväm metallcylinder eller två tum tjock stång, som båda saknar någon piska, gör att du vill vara ur rackposition så snabbt som möjligt. En tryckpress är lättare att utföra och lära sig och kräver mindre atletik, och de flesta gymkillar kan lära ut det.

I slutet av 2000-talet började den trenden förändras. Ett par bröder (Kevin och Kirk Nowack) med tyngdlyftningsbakgrund hade blivit professionella Strongmen och tävlade över hela världen i 105 kg-divisionen. Nyfiken (eller inte så mycket om du är ett fan av effektivitet) började de rycka de udda föremålen i takhissarna med stor framgång.
Som idrottare och tränare antog jag stilen och började lära mina elever hur man ska flytta i vikt. År 2007 satte min klient Kelly Pichone kvinnornas lätta stockar och axel max-liftrekord med ryck. Strax därefter satte tungviktproffs Jason Krystal herrarnas tungviktprofessionell rekord med en splittrad. Det tog snabbt fart, och jag var säker på att alla idrottare skulle bli ryckmästare inom en snar framtid. Jag hade halv fel.
Den 21 maj vann USA: s Rob Kearney världsledningen i Log Lift i Litauen med en lift på 202.5 kg - som 105kg kroppsviktatlet (hans liftar från Litauen är inbäddade nedan). Kearney är en mästare i stock split jerk och slår 180 kg för multiplar i gymmet.
Rob är den lättaste idrottaren som någonsin slog denna vikt. Vid Strongman Corporations America's Strongest Man 2015 slog han ut presspressen Sean Demarinis med 4.5 kg för maxloggen i 105 kg-klassen och överträffades bara av några kg av en av de bästa tyngdarna (det betyder att idrottare över 105 kg, för läsare som är nya inom sporten). Hans senaste mästerskap kom medan han tävlade med idrottare som tippar skalan i öppen klass, många av dem över 140 kg. Det är sällsynt att se en av hans tyngre konkurrenter rycka stocken. Pushpressen regerar med massmonster.
Det verkar som att de lättare idrottarna känner sig mer bekväma med tekniken medan de större killarna har svårt att anpassa sig. Vid Arnold Strongman-mästerskap i Columbus, Ohio var mellanvikt och lätta män och kvinnor ungefär 50/50 på push press vs. rycka. De mest framgångsrika i loggen var dock ryckare. När vi bytte till tyngderna, var det inte en jerk att hitta. Varför vägrar vissa idrottare att anpassa sig? Enligt min mening är det enkelt: coaching.
Det tog mig två års coachning innan jag kände mig kompetent att rycka i en tävling och ytterligare ett år innan jag försökte lära mig tekniken. Jag är en snabb lärare och tar lätt på styrketräning. Jerk är komplex och kräver perfekt timing för att utföra. För att lära ut det är en bra tränare ett måste.
CrossFit har utökat intresset för liftarna - tyngdlyftning, kraftlyftning och till och med starkman - och ökat coachingpoolen. Tyvärr för rookien Strongman har det inte varit lätt att hitta en erfaren tränare, och många känner om deras lyft kan hålla dem konkurrenskraftiga, varför ändra? Det är särskilt svårt att övertyga en enorm Strongman vars massa kan skicka 170 kg skyward med mindre än perfekt teknik. Men anledningen blir tydligare för varje tävling: du kommer inte att vinna omkostnaderna utan det om en bra ryckare är där.
